Winter Wellness Starts Now!

Simple, intentional ways to care for your body through the colder months
Every year, as the temperatures drop, our routines begin to change. We spend more time inside, gather in closer quarters, and often find ourselves juggling holiday preparations, family commitments, busy schedules, and a little less sleep than we probably need.
It’s easy to put our own well-being on the back burner until we start feeling run-down.
But what if this year we approached the season a little differently?
What if we made wellness a daily practice instead of a last-minute scramble?
Here are a few of the foundations I believe are worth paying attention to as we head into winter.
1. Nourish your body with real food.
Our bodies need consistent nourishment. Build meals around a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits, quality protein, healthy fats, and fiber-rich foods. Foods such as citrus, berries, leafy greens, beans, nuts, and seeds can provide important nutrients that support normal immune function.
And yes, a warm bowl of homemade soup or a cup of elderberry-infused goodness can be a comforting part of a winter routine!
2. Don’t underestimate the power of rest.
Sleep is not a luxury. It is an essential part of overall health and immune function. Make room for a consistent bedtime, a calming evening routine, and enough sleep to help your body function at its best.
Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is slow down.
3. Hydrate, even when you’re not thirsty.
Winter seems to be my hardest time to work on my watwr consumption.
When the weather turns cold, it’s easy to forget about drinking water. Proper hydration supports normal bodily functions, including circulation and the maintenance of healthy mucous membranes.
Keep water nearby, enjoy a warm herbal tea, and make hydration part of your daily rhythm.
4. Get outside and move your body.
Fresh air, natural daylight, and regular movement can support overall well-being. Take a walk, tend to your garden, stretch, or simply step outside for a few minutes when the weather allows.
You don’t have to have a complicated exercise routine to begin building healthier habits.
5. Give stress the attention it deserves.
Between work, family, finances, and the holiday rush, stress can quietly accumulate. Make time for prayer, quiet reflection, meaningful connection, and activities that help you unwind.
Our well-being involves more than what we put in our bodies. The way we live, rest, and care for ourselves matters, too.
6. Be intentional about everyday prevention.
Wash your hands, improve indoor ventilation when possible, stay current with recommended vaccinations, and avoid close contact with others when you’re sick. These simple measures can help reduce the spread of respiratory infections.
And remember: if symptoms become severe, persistent, or concerning, seek appropriate medical care.
A little reminder from Paula
We don’t have to wait until we’re overwhelmed to start making better choices.
Start with one thing. Drink more water. Go to bed a little earlier. Add more nourishing foods to your plate. Make time to breathe.
Then build from there.
At Mackey Meadows, I believe in combining practical wellness habits with the traditional wisdom of plants. Not as a replacement for appropriate medical care, but as part of a thoughtful, whole-person approach to caring for ourselves.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s preparation, consistency, and stewardship of the body we’ve been given.

🌱 A Little Bottle of Plant Wisdom
How herbal tinctures and syrups fit into a winter wellness routine
One of the questions I love answering is, “Why tinctures? Why syrups? And why would I want to keep them on hand?”
Let’s talk about it!
For generations, people have turned to herbs as part of their traditional wellness practices. Today, herbal preparations continue to be popular because they offer convenient ways to incorporate selected plants into everyday routines.
At Mackey Meadows, I take great joy in working with plants and creating small-batch preparations with care and intention. Every herb has its own history, traditional uses, characteristics, and considerations. I carefully choose each herb to support that mission.
Understanding the preparation is just as important as understanding the plant.
🌿 What is an herbal tincture?
A tincture is a concentrated liquid herbal preparation made by extracting plant constituents into a liquid, commonly alcohol and water, or another suitable solvent.
Depending on the herb and preparation method, tinctures can offer a convenient way to take selected herbs without brewing a cup of tea or preparing the plant from scratch.
A few examples from the meadow include:
Elderberry Tincture: Elderberry has a long history of traditional use during the colder months. We have seen it personally shorten the duration of a cold and elevate our immune system during compromised environments.
Echinacea Tincture: Echinacea is traditionally used in seasonal wellness practices. This one is a favorite natural support during winter days.
Mullein Tincture: Mullein has a history of traditional use in respiratory wellness and is an essential on our shelf for that congested cough.
Lemon Balm Tincture: Lemon balm is traditionally used for relaxation and calming routines, making it an herb worth learning about when building a more intentional approach to rest and well-being. If you need to calm your nerves or stop the racing thoughts so you can rest - Lemon Balm is our top choice.
Each plant has a different profile. More is not necessarily better, and the right choice depends on the individual, the preparation, the intended use, and any medications or health conditions involved. At Mackey Meadows we understand it's not a "one size fits all" but wholey support individual needs.
🍯 Why herbal syrups?
Syrups offer another way to incorporate selected herbs into a liquid preparation. Their texture and sweetness can make them especially appealing for people who prefer something other than a traditional tincture. Also used in conjunction with the tincture adding it to your dose of syrup.
Our Mackey Meadows Elderberry Syrup is one of the preparations closest to my heart. Elderberry, raw honey, warming spices, and carefully selected ingredients come together in a familiar, comforting seasonal staple.
Honey can soothe a cough for some adults and children over one year old.
For me, these preparations are about honoring traditional plant knowledge while continuing to learn personally and through those who are seasoned in the field.
🌿 Why have herbal preparations ready before you need them?
Think about it this way.
When your household is busy, someone is feeling under the weather, or you’re simply trying to maintain your usual wellness routine, having thoughtfully selected supplies on hand can make it easier to follow through with the plan you’ve already made.
You don’t have to begin researching every option in the middle of a stressful day.
You can already know what you have, how it is intended to be used, how to read the label, and when a healthcare professional’s advice is needed.
That is the kind of preparation I want to encourage.
A word about responsible herbal use
Natural does not automatically mean safe for everyone. Herbs may interact with medications, affect underlying health conditions, or be unsuitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or childhood. Tinctures contain a % of alcohol, and concentrated products require particular care.
Always ask a qualified health professional about potential interactions.
At Mackey Meadows, education is part of the heart behind what we do. I want you to understand what you’re choosing, why you’re choosing it, and how to make informed decisions for your household.
Because being prepared is about more than having products in the cabinet. It’s about knowing how to use them wisely.

💚 WHY PREPARE NOW?
Because peace of mind often starts with a little planning.
I want you to think beyond the idea of simply buying a bundle. Think about having a designated place for your wellness supplies, knowing what you have, understanding how each product is intended to be used, and checking your stock before you need to replenish it.
And please remember: more products do not automatically mean better health. Choose the collection that makes sense for your family needs.
These bundles are an opportunity to explore selected products from the meadow as part of a thoughtful approach to personal wellness. Some of my personal favorites.
A NOTE FROM PAULA
I put my heart into Mackey Meadows because I believe people deserve the opportunity to learn about the plants around us and make informed choices about their wellness and offer what I believe to be a better way in many circumstances.
Every bottle represents care, intention, and the time that goes into creating a small-batch product.
I want you to feel good about what you bring into your home — not because someone pressured you to buy it, but because you’ve taken the time to understand it and decided it fits your needs.
Whether you choose Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, or none at all right now, I’m grateful you’re here.
